Everything Comes in Eights

Everything comes in eights-- at least today. Thank Suz for my octomania.

Eight things I am looking forward to:
1. Crime and justice museum tomorrow
2. Ghost walk tomorrow
3. Meeting my ancestors in person and filling in all the gaps in their stories
4. Meeting Micah!
5. American currency (no more multiplying everything by 3/2!)
6. Unpacking my suitcases and BURYING them in the farthest corner of the garage. I never want to see them again!
7. Driving. Much as I love the serious calf muscles I'm developing . . .
8. GOING HOME !!!!!!!!!!!!

Eight things I did yesterday:
1. Got lost. (Ha! I bet you weren't expecting that one, were you? Don't worry-- it was only for a couple of blocks.)
2. Discovered that my ancestor got kicked out of the Baptist church.
3. Went to institute. Yay!
4. Spent way too much time laughing over dumb genealogy jokes that 95% of my friends/acquaintances wouldn't understand (yes, I'm a geek-- I admit it).
5. Handled 170 year old documents with my bare hands
6. Got told that I had a cool accent (huh? These people obviously don't get out enough, do they?)
7. My laundry.
8. Finally pulled out my Jerusalem sandals again. Yay for warm weather!

Eight things I wish I could do:
1. Hold/play with all my nieces and nephews right now!
2. Keep a consistent journal for more than 2 weeks at a time (I did just finish another one, and that's a good start, right?)
3. Get all the way through my reading list.
4. Sew.
5. Play the piano better.
6. Understand and fix cars.
7. Have telepathy.
8. Have my own library (complete with super-comfy couches to curl up in)

Eight books I like (I changed this because I don't really read any magazines other than church ones):
1. North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell
2. Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine
2. The Hot Zone by Richard Preston
3. Eating Chocolates and Dancing in the Kitchen by Tom Plummer
4. Cheaper by the Dozen (edited for profanity) by Frank Gilbreth Jr.
5. Wild Swans by Jung Chang
6. Les Miserables by Victor Hugo
7. The Giver by Lois Lowry
8. The Book of Mormon

Eight books I did NOT like:
1. Twilight series. You can start throwing rocks now. I admit, they were captivating, and I was hooked for a while, but they have no depth. Honestly, how many different ways are there to say "He was so gorgeous!"
2. Lord of the Flies. Man is hopelessly evil. End of story. I'm supposed to enjoy that WHY?
3. The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks. I had such high hopes when I started listening to it on tape. But then, I got to the middle and it had the same dumb sex scene that was in the movie-- and I stopped the book and never finished it.
4. Robinson Crusoe. I'm sorry, but for all this is supposed to be a classic, it was the most boring book EVER. A guy gets shipwrecked, builds a hut, and sits there. Yep. That's about all that happens.
5. October Sky. Once again, I had such high hopes after the movie, but it turned out to be full of raunchy stuff. I didn't finish it either.
6. The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway. Hemingway has always been way too depressing for me. An old man spends all his energy trying to catch a giant fish, finally catches it, and then it gets eaten by sharks on the way home. It reminds me of Brother Skinner's summary of life in ancient Sumer: Life stinks and then you die.
7. Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. The only reason the ending of this book is happy is that everyone dies! Good riddance!
8. Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury. Creepy. Just too creepy.

Eight movies I like:
1. North and South
2. Amazing Grace
3. Return to Me
4. Much Ado About Nothing (edited)
5. Mulan
6. Chariots of Fire
7. Singing in the Rain
8. The Emperor's New Groove

Eight things on my wishlist:
1. North and South DVD
2. New clothes (6 months of wearing the same 3 pairs of pants and 9 shirts. Need I say more?)
3. Enough self-control to go to bed at a reasonable hour
4. A ticket to Wicked in London
5. A new haircut
6. Return to Me soundtrack
7. One of Mom's homecooked meals
8. Cell phone. I miss being able to talk to people at home.

Eight reasons I'm not tagging any bloggers:
1. One word: ANNOYING
2. This way I don't have to pick my favorite eight friends (that's what facebook is for, right?)
3. I probably don't even have eight friends that actually read this blog
4. My answers are so funny you're all going to emulate me anyway.
5. Danielle would have to actually come up with a title (hey, on second thought, maybe I should . . . )
6. Less chance of getting tagged again.
7. I want to actually have friends by the end of this.
8. I'm going to bed.

Bravo for the best ending of any tagging! I've just added a few things to my book list-thanks!

That's so funny. Twilight is fun but total brain candy. I HATE Lord of the Flies and I never finished Robinson Crusoe because it was so boring!

A comment on each category...

>looking forward #3: hopefully not tomorrow while doing #2

>yesterday #4: please share, even though I probably won't get them

>wishing #8: hooray for comfy couches

>good books #2: Way to sneak in an extra! I liked both of them, but I'm surprised they made it under the same number--I don't really consider them that similar. Why did you read the Hot Zone? (It was an assignment for my biology class)

>bad books #4: I never made it through that one on my own--my dad ended up reading it to me when I was assigned it in 5th grade. It was not fascinating to me.

>good movies #8: boom, baby!

>wishlist #1: North and South keeps showing up here. A favorite, I take it?

>tagging #8: sleep well!

Thanks for sparing me the enormous task of coming up with another title. I always wondered if anyone thought Americans had cool accents. I'm glad you do! Also, like you could ever finish your reading list! I'm sure it's way too long for that. Although I could suggest a few good things for it (Orson Scott Card's Women of Genesis I KNOW you would like).

What about meeting Amy? She's getting jealous of Micah.

Seems like a North and South theme going on. Maybe we need to do a movie night when you get home? Or a read-a-thon like the old days? ps--it's okay that amy's a little jealous. she always has been of micah's handsomeness

We were having a discussion around the dinner table about hobbies that people have that you just "don't get". Some people just can't understand why other people are so passionate about their hobby - say....rock climbing or working in the yard, or even running a marathon. It's like, "Why would anyone ever love doing THAT?" So, I asked everyone what it is that they don't understand what the big deal about - "one person" (not naming names) said "genealogy"! Humph, humph. JK. I, personally, LOVE genealogy, so if you ever want to tell a family history joke, I am an APPRECIATOR!

Great post Kim. I especially love your creative ending to avoid the tagging. Very clever. Although, based on the number of comments, you have at least eight blog readers. ;o) Have a wonderful day.

I've added a few books to my "to read" list . . . but most of all it's only EIGHT days until you arrive home! Then I expect to hear the details you only alluded to. --Mom

Hah! I'm pretty sure that more than 8 people read your blog because there are already 9 comments after like 2 days...We're so excited for you to get back home! And, Mom/me won't mind one bit surrendering your yucko pink phone back to the rightful owner. :)

SO insightful and FUN!!!! I feel very educated on your trip... and btw the museum trip sounds AMAZING!!!!! Someday I'll go to England... :D And based on your assessment of Twilight I know I wouldn't like it either. Therefore I shan't bother. GIRL! I love you!
